'A Mate for Hudson' is the second book in the ‘Omegas of Animals’ series. It stars omega wolf shifter Hudson, and Alpha bear shifter Shane. The story is told in first person from both Hudson and Shane’s povs.First, I should mention that the blurb states that this book can be read as a stand-alone. It can, sort of. The problem is, it starts off with Hudson having to leave his pack. No reason is given except to save his life and his brother’s life. The story starts as if it left a cliffhanger from the previous book, but with no information. None of this information is covered later in the story either. If a reader doesn’t mind not having all the background about Hudson and why he ran away, then consider this book a stand-alone. I personally don’t think it is one, because not enough info is given of Hudson’s past. If the authors had blended more information throughout the story about what happened, then yes, it would have been a stand-alone.I’ve read quite a few books by this team of authors, and so far, I’m enjoying this series the most. I read two short stories in this series first and then this one. The paranormal world they created is more detailed than many of their previous stories. The writing is smoother and the characters have more depth. The storyline isn’t rushed. I often got the impression that books in their other series were spit out as fast as possible without much concern about making the book as best as it could possibly be. I don’t get that feeling with this one.In other series the authors have written, I was often dissatisfied with the lack of world building. But the creation in this one of a shifter club called Animals, out in the desert somewhere, is pretty cool. Top it off with an intuitive woman named Karma, who owns the place with her bear shifter husband, and the world is even more intriguing. I liked how some hints are given about the world and the paranormals in it, but not all questions are answered.I liked the personalities of both Hudson and Shane and I could believe in them as a couple. The one problem I had was a problem I’ve had reading other stories by this author team. The voices sounded quite similar. If I concentrated, I noticed a slight difference. But in one chapter, the ‘glow bowling’ chapter, even though I’d read the header that indicated which character’s pov it was, the voices in the chapter sounded so similar, I became confused and couldn’t figure out who I was reading. I had to go back to the chapter beginning and re-read the pov header. This tells me that the authors still need to work on more distinctive character voices, because even if I’d forgotten who’s pov it was, I should’ve been able to tell who was speaking just by their pattern of speech and word usage, and I couldn’t.If you’re looking for big sexy scenes, you’re not going to find it in this story. It’s pretty much fade-to-black and I liked that. The mpreg is a small part of this story, which I also liked. The book is about character development and not about the sex. It’s about Hudson accepting he’s not a loner, that Shane is worthy of love, and the things they do together as a couple to learn about each other. I also liked the fact that the omega was not a submissive, weak character and that Hudson wasn’t all about ‘must have baby.’ He was strong, independent and had a job he enjoyed.Overall, I enjoyed, 'A Mate for Hudson'. It has more world building and character development than other stories I’ve read by these authors. Hudson and Shane are believable as a couple. I’d read other books in the series. Loving one another against all odds gives you all the feels.Hudson is a fierce omega wolf. He had to flee home to escape a dangerous punishment for a crime he never had a hand in committing. For the sake of his life and his brother, he does as he is told and flees. The seer laid out all the steps for Hudson to arrive safely in his new life. Karma always knows when to show up.Shane is a latent bear and so tired of dating. Once an omega finds out he cant' change into his animal form, they bolt. Tired of his roommate pushing him to find love, he agrees to one last date and then he's free to do his woe is me routing at home. In his heart, all he wishes is to find love like other shifter couples and especially his roommate. Little did he know, this would be the best decision of his life. If only he could get out of his own wall of self doubt.Shane and his roomie double date at the best club in town, Animals. There he ogles an employee named Hudson. He finds it hard to enjoy himself as his date gets drunk and he feels obligated to keep an eye on him. Their paths keep crossing and leave it to Karma to find a way. Shane and his date go outside for some air. His date, for the umpteenth time, realizes he is unable to shift and begins attacking him. Shane is a gentlemen and takes all the blow, despite then drawing blood. Hudson shifts and protects his fated mate. Too bad he isn't listening to the voices and emotions just yet.Hudson helps Shane clean up his wounds. Things go from one step to another. Yes, Karma is definitely involved. Yet, so is the Omega Moon. Leave it up to Shane to fight it. Thinks he is unworthy of Hudson's love. Hudson refuses to give up on his fate and works hard to let Shane know he is worthy of love, a mate and his latent state is irrelevant.If you read the previous series, Crimson Cliff Pack, you'll remember Hudson's brother Raff. Both escaped a dangerous pack and have found their happily ever afters. So perfect to see their families expanded and reunited. Lavender is still as cute and bossy as ever.***************************************************************************************************While this book can be read as a standalone, it will be worth your time to read the series in order.
